Some quick notes on this unused – but still there – station.
Location
Just beside the Millers Road overpass on the Geelong (& main Werribee??) train line. East of the overpass, that is, towards Williamstown.
History
“Paisley was built as a wayside station on the Geelong line some time in the 1920’s. It was just a platform with no building or fence for many years. When the line to Werribee was electrified about 1983, Paisley had an island platform and station building, but there was very little traffic using it., In 1985 the Werribee trains were diverted through Altona and Westona to Laverton and the station (as well as Galvin at Maidstone St) were closed to traffic.” Source: http://www.railpage.com.au/f-t11343618.htm
My 2014 Photos
I took these rushed shots, in the rain with (I found out later) a faulty lens on the Sony Nex-6 camera. Ah well, treat them as snapshots:
Above: From the Millers Rd overpass, looking East towards Williamstown
Above: from Ross Road, looking ~South. The fence isn’t that big here. But it would be dangerous to jump it.
Next Steps
To try and find some old photos of it when it was active.
When l attended Paisley High School from around 1977, l used to walk my girlfriend to Paisley Station to catch her train home to Werribee. At that time it was still the mainline to Geelong and beyond. The passenger service ran from Newport to Werribee and using a diesel (DERM) usually just one motorised carriage- sometime with a 2nd carriage attached. At that time there was definitely a building on the platform that had a ticket window at the end facing the public foot-ramp. It was one of the VR portable type buildings, but had been there for some time but cant remember if it was manned – doubtful but if so, would only have been during peak hours. It would have been quite handy for the local residents and also the factory workers at all the petrochemical plants at that location.
In an aside from that, I remember in my youth that there were 2 other railway stations that had been proposed back in the early 60s – one was WESTONA which was to an extention of the dead-end ALTONA line – making it one station further beyond the existing Altona terminus. This one finally did go ahead, but not until the Altona line was extended through to connect at Laverton to form the main passenger line for suburban trains, leaving Paisley/Galvin deserted and used mainly as a freight/country line.
The other proposed station was WEST NEWPORT and was to be built at the Maddox Road Railway crossing to serve the large amount of housing that was going up there from the mid 1950s – this was virtually opposite the end of REVO Street where my family home was. This one never happened, and we had to either catch a bus or take the long walk to Newport Station.
I have seen a number of colour photos of Paisley Station on different facebook sites – if l come across them again, l will post a link.
Glad to see someone delving into our Aussie history. Cheers, Kev.
